Fanwork Details:
Betaing: Plot development, characterization, alpha reading, story beats, dialogue.

Translation: Basic translation to Classical Latin.

Historical research: Initially, I can help research historical topics (e.g. food that a medieval peasant might have eaten) for fic purposes. My ultimate goal will be to help the writer develop their own research methodology and ways to find information, so they can do their own research in the long term.

Relevant experience/background:
Although I haven’t formally betaed fanfics, I have participated extensively in critique exchanges for original writing, both giving and receiving. I self-edit all of my current fanfics (see my HOTD fanfics on AO3), which should showcase my ability to edit for plot, characterization, SPAG, etc.

I have a degree in Classical Studies and am an amateur historian, with an extensive personal library of historical nonfiction books.

Additional notes about labor offered:
Historical research: Although in the beginning I am happy to help track down specific questions the writer may have, I am not the writer’s long-term personal research assistant. If I feel like the writer is relying too heavily on me without attempting to do their own research, I will gently push back and steer them toward honing their research skills. But I am a history nerd, so I will be happy to dig into interesting questions for the sake of learning!

Unwilling to address:

I want to help the writer improve their fic according to their vision. My style of giving feedback is forthright, so if you prefer a softer touch, make that clear upfront!

We can chat in DMs about expectations. Then I can read your most recent draft. You can include comments in the document with research/translation questions and where you want me to focus.

After I finish reading the draft, I will include comments, suggestions, and questions. I will try to answer research/translation question and include source materials/suggestions where you can do additional research on their own. You are welcome to ask follow-up questions.

I can do a second round of feedback, which works the same way as the first, after you have revised. However, you must send the second draft by Oct 31 or I can’t guarantee I’ll send my second round of feedback by Dec 31.
